Dug in the 17th century to link the city to the harbour, the canal is lined with merchants’ houses and old sailing ships. Hans Christian Andersen lived at several addresses here. The sunny north side is where the café terraces are; the quieter south side has the best view of the façades.

Our tipTake your photos from the south side, early in the morning or at the blue hour. To eat, walk two streets away: on the quayside terraces, you are mostly paying for the view.
