Christiania

A community born in 1971 in a former barracks: self-built houses, workshops, a lake and car-free paths.

Independent, unofficial guide, not affiliated with the places featured.

Opening hours to be checkedFreeVisit: 1 h 15

Christiania is first and foremost a place where people live. In 2023 the community decided to end the open hash trade, and residents began removing the paving from Pusher Street on 6 April 2024. Buying cannabis remains illegal, VisitCopenhagen points out. Residents offer guided tours: Visit Christiania leaves from the lawn in front of Grå Hal, Rundvisergruppen from the Prinsessegade entrance. Expect to pay 100 DKK and check times with them.

Our tipCan you take photos? Official sources differ: VisitCopenhagen asks you to respect the areas where it is forbidden, VisitDenmark advises not taking any at all. Follow the signs, ask before photographing anyone and respect residents’ privacy.
